A cracked heat exchanger is not something that should ever be ignored. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas which is highly toxic. The heat exchanger is metal which expands and contracts as it is subjected to high levels of temperature fluctuations. After years of use, the metal of the heat exchanger gets worn and eventually can crack. Without regular serving and inspection this can go undetected and become a serious health hazard. Electricity consumers in Ontario can produce some of their own power from a renewable resource and take advantage of the “net metering” initiative. With net metering you can send excess electricity you generate from renewable resources to the distribution system for a credit toward your energy costs or “trade” electricity you supply against electricity you consume.
Connected to the distribution system, your local utility will continue to read your meter just as they do now and then subtract the value of electricity you supply to the grid from the value of what you take from the grid. You’ll be billed for the “net” difference between these two amounts. If you supply more power than what you take from the grid over the billing cycle, you’ll receive a credit that can be carried forward for up to 12 months of future hydro bills.
Feed-in Tariff (FIT) & microFIT
The FIT and microFIT programs are designed for projects that generate electricity from a renewable resource such as wind, water, solar energy, and bioenergy (biomass, bio-gas, or landfill gas). The microFIT program is for projects with a capacity of 10 kilowatts or less. The FIT program is for larger projects.
The Ontario Government through the OPA is still providing 20 year guaranteed price per kilowatt hour contracts when connected to the grid, however these are declining year over year. Systems over 10 KWs provide higher subsidies but approvals take time from start to finish, we will advise you on the pros and cons. Over time as the cost of solar electricity falls to meet the rising cost of electricity, parity will be reached, and in principle incentives will no longer be needed.

Not all solar panels are created equal and are as durable for Canadian climates, cost vs lower maintenance are key factors to weigh in choosing this passive energy source to provide optimal sunlight savings.
For example, double glass modules do not present any exposed conductive parts and therefore do not require grounding. More durable systems stand up better to wind and heavy snowfalls, and will last long with little or no maintenance expense over their lifetime.
Proper installation however is critical, every region has a different optimum orientation and tilt for the PV modules to face perpendicular to the sun’s rays and reach maximum sunlight yields. Any partial shading and even natural debris deposits such as a layer of air pollution will reduce yields and sunlight should be able to reach the panels on even the shortest day of the year. Modules with sufficient tilt of at least a 15 degree, generally do not require cleaning since rain has a self-cleaning effect in most locations. Solar PV panels generally work best when installed at approximately a 30 to 45 degree angle in a south-facing direction with no obstructions such as trees or other buildings. Ground clearance is also important to allow cooling air to circulate around the back of the module and enable condensation or moisture to dissipate.
